Baronbass Basset Hounds

About Us

Baronbass kennels was founded in 1995.

I have been involved with Basset Hounds for a number of years and am a member of the Basset Hound Club of Victoria and New South Wales ,and The Basset Hound Club of America.

I am a Registered Breeder and member of the South Australian Canine Association.  I am also on the Trainee Judges Training Program for Group 4 (Hounds) in 2008.

I have a tolerant supportive husband and a 15 year old (Going on  20)  daughter.

I am a Veterinary Nurse , and work for the talented and caring

Dr.C.Girling (BVS) at Noah's Crossing Veterinary clinic in Lewiston South Australia.

Dr.Girling is a reproductive specialist and has helped me inseminate my last two litters by

artificial insemination with fantastic results.

A first for Baronbass Kennels!  Thank you Chris!!

I have been involved with the dog world for over 25 years.

I started off with my Australian Cattle Dog (Luke-in heaven) in obedience trials,

and then as an instructor assisting other dog lovers to train their dogs.

I have trained in most aspects of obedience from, Novice, Open and Utility Classes.

I am now involved and passionate with the showing of my Basset Hounds and continually strive

to improve the breed and making the public aware of the great quality's the Basset Hound has.

I have just imported from Foxglen Kennels USA , a lovely young dog for our breeding program.

American Champion Foxglen Longhorn Suthrn Pride (IMP USA ).

He has, in my opinion, one of the finest Basset Hound Pedigree’s in the world

and we look forward to his influence in our breeding program.

We are only a small kennel, consisting of the "show team" and the "retired" show team.

All my oldie's spend the rest of their lives with me here at Baronbass.

They have made me proud and deserve their place in the sun.

~Thank you to all my friends who have supported me in my endeavors.

~Big thanks to my family for putting up with me and my hounds,

~The dog hairs in the bath because l have a show,

~The sleeping in the whelping box for 3 weeks and letting my family fend for itself,

~The loading of the car , the trips to the vets, the mince for dinner when the dogs get steak,

~The hairs on our clothes that l can never get out, the dribble that flies just after

a drink and just as we are about to leave to go out

~But we wouldn't have it any other way!!!

YES MY FAMILY ARE OWNED BY BASSETS!!!!

It is as if he realizes that he will never win any canine beauty prizes, so he makes up in character

and disposition, for what he lacks in looks.

The Basset is a sociable dog. Used to hunting in packs, he is well able to get along with other dogs

and will lavish affection on a person who treats him kindly.

He is good with children and if you have a cat or bird in the house, the Basset will accept them as a family member.

His disposition is good natured. Around the house he is satisfied to stay on his bed,

or a favorite spot on the carpet—or on a piece of furniture, if it is allowed.

While many Bassets lead languid lives as placid, loyal house pets, the Basset has a long history as a hunting breed.

He is a scent hound, which means he uses his nose much more readily than his eyes.

This is why it is important to keep him confined to a completely fenced area, unless he is supervised.

A Basset un-supervised will “scent” for miles, without “seeing” where he is going, and then when the “scent” is gone,

finds himself lost with no apparent way of finding home. The Basset is not generally a destructive breed, though puppies,

when they are teething, can be expected to chew, to ease their gums. It is wise to give them their “own” toys

to chew and teach them from an early age that “your toys” are not permitted.

The Basset is highly adaptable to training, learning fairly quickly. While he may do things slowly, he’s fairly reliable once he has absorbed his training.
