Bayalot is a small kennel situated in Brisbane, Queensland. The "Bayalot" prefix originates from our days of breeding and exhibiting beagles.
In 2003 we purchased our first Shar Pei, just for something a little different. Charm (Amibas Sui Lin) has always been such a fabulous dog to live with, after the ever-mischieveous beagles, that we were eventually totally converted to this most wonderful breed.
Our dogs are raised from birth in our home with our 3 noisy young sons (two of which do taekwondo and one of whom is learning the saxophone) and our cat Isabelle (who teaches them correct feline etiquette). Our pups usually grow to have outgoing and relatively bombproof natures.
Why A Shar Pei?
Shar Pei are truly a fabulous breed to live with. They are generally very well behaved both indoors & out. They are not usually destructive nor do they tend to roam, preferring their own home. They are very intelligent and easy to train - toilet training is a snap with this breed. They are moderately active and will be satisfied with regular walks and lots of couch time.
Shar Pei are intensly loyal and devoted to their families. When raised with children they remain calm and tolerant. They tend to be cautious of strangers until properly introduced, so make excellent guards. Similarly they are devoted to other animals in the family, but not always tolerant of strange dogs. They rarely bark for no reason.
Early socialization & training is important to get the best from this breed, as is a high quality diet.
The name Shar Pei literally translates to "sand skin". This refers to the harsh bristly coat of a horsecoat Shar Pei. The slightly longer and still off-standing brushcoat is also acceptable. The long soft bearcoat is not acceptable in the showring or in a breeding program. Bearcoats occasionally pop up in litters but this is a breed fault and not to be encouraged.
The Shar Pei coat should be a solid colour. Flowered or parti-coloured coats are not acceptable at this time. Again this is a fault and should not be encouraged in any breeding program.
While both bearcoat and flowered Shar Pei still make wonderful pets, they should never be used for breeding. Any breeder doing so is not breeding for the betterment of the breed, but for the betterment of their wallets.
