Recent Litters
**Due to the demands of establishing our dog grooming business "Pampered Paws" we are not anticipating any litters here at Milkwood until further notice. If we know of any litters with other breeders, we can forward your enquiries. ** Here are some of our past litters which feature typical Milkwood puppies, both Cocker Spaniel and St Bernards. We had a litter by "Jag" NZCH Glenbriar Ozi Express (Imp Aust) to Ch Milkwood Gee Ayel B Blue on 21 May 2010. We had such lovely results from this combination last time, we thought we would do it again. Becca had three girls and a boy, all blue roan. Photos below, stacked at 7 weeks and a cutie at 4 weeks..

Milkwood Kwite By Chance has whelped a litter of three beautiful girls to NZCH Bernegarden's Joker Adamson (Imp Swe) on 10 May 2008. Due to the wonders of modern technology, this litter has been successfully produced from frozen semen which has been "on ice" for 16 years! "Hugo" still had the goods and both "Bonnie" and her babies are doing well. Huge thanks to Tracey Cooper, "Bonnie"'s mum, and Judith O'Leary, "Hugo"'s mum for allowing this litter to happen...all puppies are spoken for...

If, with each litter bred, you can say "This is the best litter yet", then you must surely be achieving what most breeders strive to do: Improving your own stock and getting that one step closer to the "ultimate". We breed our dogs for our own interest. Sometimes we have two litters in a year, sometimes only one, and when we have youngsters to concentrate on in the showring, or other priorities, not at all. Each proposed litter is researched as thoroughly as possible, and not undertaken lightly. Each litter involves a huge amount of time, care and financial commitment. We try to give each puppy the best possible start to prepare them for life's journey. Dionne is a member of the NZKC Accredited Dockers Panel. We will continue to dock our cocker spaniel puppies' tails by banding at 2 days until such time as government legislation prevents us.

If you are interested in a Milkwood puppy, please get in touch. We are always happy to talk about the prospects of our puppies, or the placement of older dogs - see our Rehousing Opportunities Page. If we have no puppies ourselves, we may know of other breeders who we can recommend. We require any buyer to have a secure property, fenced and gated, as the dogs have no road sense and it only takes a moment for tragedy to happen. We also recommend that a new puppy is given time to settle properly into a new home and get to know who the new "leader" of the family is. All puppies chew and have lots of energy and tend to get into mischief, like not realising the TV remote is not actually a chewy bone, so this has to be taken into account when considering a new addition to the family. Accidents will also happen while housetraining is undertaken, so please bear in mind the puppies are only babies and do not come preprogrammed. We will, where possible, supply a new owner with a booklet on general care of your new puppy, a 5-generation pedigree sheet, vaccination record, a favourite toy and a supply of food and chews for the following 3-4 days to get the pup through the initial transition into a new home. We always try to support a new owner and will take a puppy back should things not work according to plan, and if future circumstances change we emphasise that we would like to be contacted to have any of our puppies back for future rehousing if this should be needed. NZKC have the new Limited Register in place where a pup will be given a pedigree name but will be endorsed "not to be bred from, shown or issued with an Export Pedigree". This will be issued with every Milkwood puppy sold into a pet home, along with a private de-sexing contract. There are already enough breeders out there supplying the petshops and pet markets without the lines we have imported from overseas and spent a lot of time and money and worked so hard to establish, joining them. We are also DNA testing our breeding stock and hip and elbow scoring. PRA-prcd and FN are two diseases which can be currently tested for in cockers, hip and elbow xrays can apply to both our breeds. There are many other conditions which can afflict a dog. Whilest we do our best to produce the best we can in health and temperament, and match a puppy to its new owner's lifestyle and personality, we take no responsibility for what may happen once a dog leaves our front gate. Environment and diet can play a large part in the welfare of any dog. In all cases, we ask that any prospective puppy owner use their commonsense in dog ownership. Make sure a new puppy will be welcomed by EVERY member of the family. If one person is against the idea, DON'T get a dog! Make sure the new puppy knows its place in the "pecking order" and that YOU are its leader. The puppy will be looking to YOU for love and guidance. Try your local obedience clubs for basic training. The experience will be good for both of you and will help in socialisation of your young dog. Finally, dog ownership is one of the most rewarding experiences in this life we have. A dog's love is unconditional and in return, we should give no less.
