Rex: The German Pinscher

Rex's Story

This is the story of how Rex came into our lives and stole our hearts.

In mid 2004, I started to look at different breeds of dogs, in the past my family had always had GSD and Border Collies. I was looking for a breed that could compete in both obedience and agility, so the hunt was on!!  A few years ago I had seen an article of the German Pinscher, so I started to look on the internet as to their 'trainablilty'.  During this stage of research I found some wonderful people, who guided me in the right direction.  Which is how I came in contact with Chris & Kate of FireDragon Kennels. They would be having a litter, and they had agreed to put me onto thier list.  During all of this I had to make the devistating decision to say goodbye to my GSD 'Nelson' (Aldahoven Fool Hardy CDX) aged just 3 years. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would now be looking for a puppy at such a traumatic time in our lives. So more than ever I was now looking for an obedience dog, to go side-by-side with Lincoln UD AD ET JD. My brain was now telling me that Lincoln is not going to be around forever, so I needed a dog to follow on with.  So with that in mind we also took on a GSD puppy in March of 2006. Aldahoven Bud E Wiser CD, aka Bud was to become Rex's best mate.

Rex was born on October 14, 2006. Kate, rang me to tell me there were 2 boys, so we would have to wait and see which of their personalities would be best suited to my requests.  As the boys grew, it became apparent that the little red boy, was a softer temperament, and Rex was a bold, strong boy who was going to take on the world. We needed a puppy like that, having a mixed household with one mother superior (Tessa), he would need to be outgoing to fit in with our clan.  8 weeks seemed to take so long, and we flew to Melbourne to collect Rex, and be sure we had the 'right' dog for us. When we arrived at the house, Rex ran out to say G'Day. From that minute on he was ours. Or rather we were his!!!

Upon getting Rex home, he walked in like he owned the place, and Tessa just looked at him as if to say "I've got news for you mate!!!" She followed him eveywhere, just watching, making sure he didn't cross the line. Lincoln was more worried that the puppy would get more pats than him, and Bud, well he became Rex's walking electric blanket, we are so lucky that we have such a balanced bunch of dogs. Now it feels like Rex has always been here, and I can't believe that I didn't get a GP sooner.
