KOREKE
Chinese Crested Dogs

F A Q

This is an interesting breed - it challenges our thinking and poses many questions, these are examples of the most commonly asked questions:

Question: Do Crested's get on with other animails?

The above picture is of Tengra with his mate and best friend German Shepherd Djinni. It is with great saddness that we acknowledge Djinni's death on the 13th March 2008.  Bernard's best mate will be sadly missed by all the Crested's at Koreke; esp the puppies, the cat Rangi (Rangi joined Djinni in April) and her 'rabbitting mate' Tengra

Question: Why do you de-sex puppies and older dogs that go to new homes?

•  De-sexing a male dog is a quick operation. It involves removing the testicles that produce the male hormone testosterone. Once done, dogs are often less likely to roam and less likely to be aggressive towards other male dogs.
  • If a female is spayed before her first heat (at about 6-8 months old) it will decrease the chances of her developing mammary tumors in the future

Question: Do you shave him / her ?

Hairless Chinese Crested's are born hairless - all require grooming to achieve the look seen in the show ring. Faces in both the hairless and powderpuff are normally shaved. The bodies of the hairless grow a varying amount of hair; some require a very light shave, some the removal of hair which tends to grow down the spine and yet others require regular shaving of body hair which grows on the back and down the legs. This hair is not of the same thickness or length of that which grows on the dogs head, tail and feet....it is the canine 'five o'clock shadow'.

Question: Do you have to protect the skin of the Hairless in the summer?

YES!  Please take care with your Crested's skin.

Protection for the skin of the Hairless and the ears of the Puffer is vital. Provide this protection by the application of sun screens such as those suitable for babies or products such as Aniwell - Filta-Clear which is available from you Vet.

Question: Have you seen that beer advert on tele .... it has these dogs in it?

Yes we have seen 'that' advertisment! Like many others we did lay a complaint with the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority). This Board is charged with maintaning the standards of advertising seen within New Zealand. Our complaint centred on the implication that Chinese Crested Dogs were genetically modified. This complaint was not up held - the Board ruling in the favour of international brewing company Lion Nathan New Zealand Ltd. The Board accepted that enough hyperbole had been employed in the advertisment to illustrate all the statements made by the actor....therefore the advertisment was not in breach of Rule 2 of the Code of Ethics. Our appeal against the decission was not accepted either.

Because avenues to challenge this advertisment are now closed to us, we have come up with our own advertisment without employing hyperbole and we are happy to stand behind its message.....

Question: Is he / she  cold ?

All animals feel the cold if exposed to the chill of wind and rain. When exposed to winter conditions the Crested's need to be protected by a suitable jacket.
