Loana Standard Poodles

Grooming and General

In this page I will tell you some of the things I know about grooming and show preparation. There are many excellent books and websites on this topic, so acquaint yourself with as many as you wish.

A healthy poodle will have healthy skin, eyes, teeth, joints and coat (etc.) Health begins with a good diet, exercise and husbandry. You won't get these attributes with poor food, poor exercise, poor parasite control and unhealthy housing.

Of course, you will have taken care of these requirements, so how about grooming the "coat".

I prefer to brush my poodles frequently, in order to avoid matting but also to check skin, eyes, ears and nails . How frequently? That will vary with the dog, the weather, dog's age and the environment. With humid Queensland weather we need to brush quite often, but less so in winter. As my dogs live on acreage and run the paddocks on occasions my grooming load is quite large. I have to admit, at times I have had to de-mat, but I don't make my dogs pay for my neglect. I brush out mats gently, from the end of the hair towards the skin.

Bathing also depends on various factors. just be sure to use a good quality shampoo and conditioner and dry thoroughly. I won't recommend a particular product as there are many good ones, but I have found Bio Groom and Laser Lites to have a good range. a hydrobath makes life easier, but hand washing and rinsing is just as good if done thoroughly.

If you want to keep coat, you will need to learn to "band" and "wrap" your poodle's coat or somehow protect it from sun, wind and your other dogs. Some keep their poodle apart from their other pets, but I have found that I can tell them to "leave" if they get too boisterous. Use your discretion, but one cannot put ear or other hair back!

Apart from regular brushing and bathing, grooming is generally best left to a professional groomer, so it is an additional cost to owning a poodle. However, may people keep them ultra short, which is very easy and still beautiful. My pets are kept short, as you can see below. Panda is the miniature (11yrs)  and Laura is the Standard (a genteel 14 yrs).
